The experiences from the field with One2Born have been very positive. To continue developing the technology, recent updates have been applied to the first version. Take a look at the latest innovations in the One2Born 2.0!
- Compared to the first version, the One2Born 2.0 hatchholder is made only of paper pulp, and the tray can be stacked and unstacked with a rotation of 180°. The convection channels have also been optimized.
- The One2Born hatchholder allows 18-day-old incubated eggs to hatch in the barn where they will grow up. In addition, the paper pulp boxes serve as protection for the embryos during transport.
- The hatchholders are very effective and practical. The boxes are stacked during transport and the ventilation is provided by airflow channels in the box. A temperature of 31 to 32 °C must be maintained throughout transport.
- In the barn, the temperature needs to be 35 °C, with a floor temperature of 28 to 30 °C. The ideal shell temperature is 37.8 °C in the first few days.
- Before the chicks hatch, the barn is set up ready for the newly-hatched chicks, which have access to water and feed straight away.
- The One2Born technique works with no tools required in the barn. The floor is covered with 1 to 2 cm of litter (peat).
- Soon after placing the boxes in the barn, the first chicks start to hatch. The test results from Wageningen University & Research show 95% of the One2Born chicks hatch within 24 hours.
- Around 98 to 99% of the eggs hatch under the current renewed inspection techniques. There also seems to be a high survival rate of the embryos; the chicks under the One2Born concept actually do 1% better than those in the hatchery.
- After hatching, the fully biodegradable boxes act as toys for the chicks. They are also fully compostable. The boxes are certified ‘fully sterile’, and as they are single-use there is no risk of them carrying disease.
- Thanks to accelerated growth, lower mortality, better feed conversion, and healthier chicks with virtually no use of antibiotics, the investment in One2Born is recouped straight away. By using the hatchholders, the additional financial yield is between €0.04 and €0.06 per chick.
